I am the owner of several companies, one that is confronted each day with prospects looking for the SEO Guru.

We provide SEO work for small to medium size businesses to build an online presence, ranked 1-3 on the first page for terms related to their business. There are less than 10 organic positions on the first page. Not an easy task for national ranking.

The problem is that they, like many, are reading and talking to several of the 10,000 plus "SEO Experts" who tell them they can get them nationally ranked. Those that say it can be done for $1,000 are serving "Kool-aid". These prospects want to believe this price since they have limited marketing funds.

Just the other day I had a prospect asking us to get them ranked for online dating service which they just launched. Yikes. With several big boy's already in the game and now many niche online dating services there is not a simple low cost solution. There are so many parameters involved in getting ranked especially for a new site the task requires a lot of time thus money.

If you want to compete with the big boys you have to pay "like" the big boy's. The time when the Internet was a level playing field is no longer here.

Result: We didn't get the sale yet since he was hoping to spend less than $1,000.

To help the small businesses on SEO work we breakdown the task of getting them ranked into monthly work/fees- a 6 month commitment helps spread out the costs and provides us time to really work on all the things required to get a site ranked.

I agree with your conclusion - there is still too much guff getting through with savvy SEO work. And some worthy sites are suffering under the burden of competition.
It compels searches to be for long tail keyword rich titles.

I tried some of those cheap "miraculous" SEO firms which promess rank1 in SERP, here in France.
But really, i wasted my money! ridiculous!
Don't waste your time with paid traffic unless you know very well the firm. Doing organic SEO works but takes time.
My rule: 1 hour a day SEO for small buisness.

For bigger buisness, i assume it'll take some serious work, and can't be dealt without help.

No one can trust the search engines.
I wrote some New Testament Greek lessons for a church group. Afterwards I put them on my website, where I was sure no one would ever find them.

Then along came Panda...My website jumped to the first page of Google under five keywords, and then Bing followed suit by shoving it onto its first pages under five keywords (not the same keywords, however).

Now, I have to add more free Koine Greek lessons just to make the people who come there fully satisfied.

What a nuisance...I was happier when I thought no one would ever find those Adult Sunday school lessons.

No one can trust a search engine to leave well enough alone.

They have too much power over us developers too. Everytime they say jump we say "how high?" or we lose our position in the SERPs. They have too much control already - we should all start using Bing if we want relevant results - google for ads.
